			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just finished my 3 mile run on a beautiful Sunday morning.  Typically, I would write about my run, how I felt, and how grateful I am to be able to enjoy getting in shape.  But today is not a normal day.  I am watching CNN&#8217;s coverage of the 9/11 &#8211; 10 Years Later memorial broadcast.  Listening to Paul Simon singing &#8220;The Sounds of Silence&#8221;, watching people make etchings of their family members&#8217; names, hearing the names being read, and seeing the names of the victims on the screen, leaves me with such an overwhelming feeling of sadness for the victims and their families and friends.  I pray that we never have to endure such a tragedy like this again.</p>

		<title>A New Personal Best for a 5K</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thursday evening, I ran the Kaiser Permanente 5K Corporate Challenge in Downtown Atlanta.  The race started and ended at Turner Field.  I ran with my son Michael and some of his co-workers at Porter Novelli, and thousands of others.  Talk about jockeying for position! There were a couple of challenging hills, especially near the end of the race.  But the weather was great and it was a lot of fun.  My goal was to run the whole way and I accomplished that.  I improved my time from my first 5K in April by about 30 seconds so that made me feel good.  Michael told me later that one of his co-workers was surprised that I looked so fit for a 57 year old man.  He had never seen the previous version of me.  Michael told him about my health journey and he was even more amazed.  It&#8217;s a good story if I do say so myself.  In December of 2009, I weighed 245 pounds and was about to start another weight loss program.  But this time, I was ready, and I had a Health Coach to guide me through the process and hold me accountable.  And now, I have lost 85 pounds and have become a runner.  Do you believe in miracles?  I do.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My son Michael and I will be running in a Kaiser Permanente 5K on Thursday at Turner Field in Atlanta.  This afternoon, I ran with him for the first time.  I have been training for the Atlanta Half Marathon and today I was scheduled to do my usual 2.2 hilly miles.  Since Michael hasn&#8217;t run in quite a while, I suggested that he come out with me today and give it a go.</p>
<p>Having a running partner was a bit strange since I have always run alone.  I tried to keep my usual pace but, at the half way point, I knew I had gone faster than usual.  I decided to pick it up a bit and see what I had left in the tank.  I finished in 25.17 which is over a minute faster than my previous best time.</p>
<p>It was fun running with my son!  Now there&#8217;s a statement I never thought I would ever say.  It&#8217;s probably a surprise to Michael too!  Who knows &#8211; maybe running will become a family activity &#8211; started by the old man!</p>
<p>Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day!!! I will be ready!  And I will do great!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This past Sunday, I was scheduled to run 6.5 miles as part of my training for the Atlanta Half Marathon.  This would be the longest distance I have ever attempted.  The concierge at our hotel gave me a map of a couple of routes on the Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac.  Each route was a 7 mile round trip so I figured I would just do the whole 7.  What&#8217;s another half a mile, right?  So I chose to follow the path that would take me the The Jefferson Memorial.</p>
<p>I got myself ready to go, strapped on my Camelback with a couple of bottles of Smartwater, and I headed out of the hotel.  It was several block to the entrance to the trail and then down a path to the trail, right by Reagan National.  It was exciting to see the planes from that close up as they made their way to the runway for takeoff.  Then the trail follows the Potomac River, with the monuments of DC just across the river.  No matter what your political views or your attitude about our government, the view of these splendid historical buildings is pretty cool.  I was so happy to be out there on a nice, but humid morning and I said hello to every runner, walker, and biker that I saw.  I felt so great, so alive, so healthy.</p>
<p>I could see The Jefferson Memorial off to my right and my directions said to take a right turn at the George Mason Bridge.  There was only one problem.  I ran under the bridge but I saw no way to turn right without going into the water!  If I had been in a car on the road, I could have turned on the bridge but not from down on trail.  So I kept going, thinking that there is probably some way to get to the Jefferson.  Eventually, I came upon a bridge so I went part way onto it where I could see the monuments far behind me.  Ummm, this can&#8217;t be right.  Now I know I missed it and I am wondering where I am and how far away I am from the hotel.  I am actually getting a bit nervous.</p>
<p>So I turn around to go back on the trail and I see a sign that it is 4.5 miles back to Crystal City.  If I add in the distance back to the hotel, which is at least a half a mile, that means this 7 miler is actually going to be a 10 miler!  I am thinking to myself that this is going to be really hard but I did the best I could and walked when I had to.  It felt really good to see the familiar sights as I got closer to the hotel.  The Jefferson Memorial was there, right where I had left it.  Then the airport came into view and the planes landing were almost close enough to touch them.  What an amazing sight!</p>
<p>I got back to the hotel and stopped my timer at 2:18.50.  I had done 10 miles at almost the same pace at which I had done 5 miles just two weeks ago.  I was thrilled and now I am absolutely positive that I can do 13.1 in November.  Bring it on!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I tried running with my new Camelback today for the first time.  A back pack with water &#8211; fancy that!  Not only did I have water onboard, but it gave me a new source of rhythm.  The sloshing water and the sound of the straps gave me a built-in percussion section to keep pace with.  It was a very good run resulting in a new PB of 26:45 for 2.2 miles.  Just a couple of weeks ago, I was over 31 minutes on this course.  Running is getting easier and yes, even more fun!  I look forward to my runs.  Sunday will be my longest run to date &#8211; 6.5 miles &#8211; and I will be in Arlington, VA.  I am scouting out courses.  Any suggestions?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Up early on a beautiful Sunday morning, thankful that Irene has left us alone.  Yesterday we had a strong breeze but no rain at all.  My prayers go out to everyone who is affected by the storm.</p>
<p>Today, the training schedule called for a 2.5 mile run.  That means 2.2 miles in my hilly neighborhood with a little bit of relatively flat pavement in front of Publix.  I decided to run the whole thing instead of following the interval method.  I figured I could do it and do it I did!  Actually did 2.6 miles in 34.28.  Not too shabby.</p>
<p>Not long ago, I struggled to run a lap around the Georgia Tech track.  I used to go there at my lunch hour and walk, with the Tech track team looking at me, probably wondering who this old guy was.  One day, I got brave and decided to try to run a lap.  I couldn&#8217;t do it the first time I tried it but I kept at it and I finally could do a quarter mile.  Pretty soon, I was up to 2 laps.  Then, in April, I did my first 5K, a 10K in July, and now training for the Half.  I am so thankful that I have found the motivation to lose 85 pounds and to get healthy!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>And  now for something completely different.  I am at Lake Lanier Islands for a strategic planning meeting.  So, instead of my hilly neighborhood trail, I got to enjoy the beauty and magnificence of sunrise over the lake and a winding, hilly trail.  I felt like a was dragging a bit, not picking up my feet.  I think I was tentative on this unknown course.  I always feel like I have to save something for the end.  But it was a good 30 minute run &#8211; no negative after-effects from my 5 mile interval run on Sunday in Nashville.</p>
<p>As I got into the elevator to go back to my room, a guy in the elevator, who was on his way to breakfast and a business meeting, said to me, &#8220;I give you a lot of credit for getting up and exercising&#8221;.  I thanked him and thought to myself how I never thought those words would ever apply to me!  But they do!  And I do have to give myself a lot of credit for setting a goal and keeping to my schedule, even though I have been out of town a couple of times.  I take my running gear with me, I scout out the territory, and I get out of bed and run!  It&#8217;s getting better all the time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I decided not to be stubborn.  It was time to listen to those who know better than I do about running distances.  I have read Jeff Galloway&#8217;s book about running and I understand interval training (run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute).  But I felt like I had to run the whole way.  I can do a 5K without walking but 4 miles was a real problem for me last week.  This morning, my schedule called for a 5 miler.  So I asked for some advice from some of my Facebook buddies on I &lt;3 to Run and interval training seems to be the way.  Time to give up my foolish pride and listen.</p>
<p>I woke up at 6AM this morning in Nashville and was greeted to a lightning and thunder storm.  So I got myself ready and waited for the storm to pass.  I had mapped out a 5 mile course, which basically was running back and forth on a dead end road by our hotel.  Not scenic but functional.  It was about 72 degrees after the storm passed and a bit humid but not too bad.  So off I went &#8211; run 3 walk 1.  I felt really good doing this method but I must say that the 1 minute walk seemed to go by a lot faster as I got closer to the end.</p>
<p>I was astonished with my time.  1:04.24 which is under a 13 minute mile &#8211; even with walking for about 15 minutes.  I am very happy with how I felt and I can&#8217;t wait for a longer run 2 weeks from now.  13.1 miles on Thanksgiving Day!</p>
